The first full week of May.
What to write to a teacher
Teachers receive a great many mugs. They receive rather fewer accounts of what they specifically changed, which is unfortunate, because the second thing is the one people keep in a drawer for twenty years.
The useful shape is almost always the same: name the moment, then name the effect. A child who stopped dreading a subject. A conversation that landed at the right time. Patience shown on a day that clearly cost something. Teachers rarely learn how any of it turned out — the feedback loop ends when the year does.
Written by a parent or by a former student, the same rule holds. Specific beats effusive every time, and “you were a great teacher” communicates less than one concrete sentence about a Tuesday in March.
Teachers almost never find out how it turned out. Telling them is the rarest thing you can give.
Four that fit the occasion
Taken from the bank we actually send. Use the words yourself, or have one delivered anonymously.
Someone is better at their job because of you
ProfessionalYou explained something without making anyone feel small for not knowing it. That person is now doing work they could not have done a year ago, and they carry your patience into how they teach the next person. Very little of what we build outlasts us. That does.
You answer the question people actually asked
ProfessionalYou listen past the first sentence to what someone is really worried about, and then you address that. It makes meetings shorter and people calmer. It is a genuinely uncommon skill and you use it constantly.
You make new people feel like they belong
ProfessionalThe first weeks somewhere are lonely and disorienting, and you shortened that for someone. You answered the questions they were embarrassed to ask and gave them context nobody wrote down. They will pass that forward without realising where they learned it.
You give people room
PersonalYou don't rush people through their grief, their indecision, or their slow patch. Sitting with someone while they take their time is uncomfortable, and you do it anyway. Very few people can tolerate that discomfort on someone else's behalf.
Or let someone hear it without knowing it was you
A dollar sends one now. Five a month sends a different one every day, at a time you choose.
